Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MSFFL2006 - Prepare, select and apply smoothing and patching compounds

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for work

  1. Applicable work health and safety (WHS), legislative and organisational requirements relevant to selecting and applying smoothing and patching compounds for sub-floor preparation are verified and complied with
  2. Instructions and/or plans are read and interpreted to identify the process required to complete work tasks
  3. Floors are inspected to ensure that they are dry, smooth, plane, sound and clean in accordance with Australian Standards, and the extent of preparation is confirmed
  4. Trial applications of surface materials are made to determine the suitability of the primer to the sub-floor, and the appropriateness of the smoothing compound to smoothing requirements and compatibility to the primer and sub-floor application
  5. Tools, equipment and materials are selected and checked prior to use to ensure that they are appropriate for the work, serviceable and in a safe condition
  6. Material safety data sheets (MSDS), or equivalent, are read and applied during the work
  7. Materials and equipment are prepared and positioned for use
  8. Surfaces are cleaned in accordance with manufacturer recommendations
